Mid-ocean skydiving

Thierry Demonfort, the only test skydiver of the national marines jumps in tandem with the chief doctor Isabelle Ausset from the emergency slide of an Atlantic 2 plane at an altitude of 3000 metres in order to reach a nuclear submarine in the middle of the Mediterranean sea. After the shoot opens at 2000 metres, the tandem lands in the water 2 metres from the SNA which has resurfaced in an agitated sea and 20 knots of wind. This delicate experiment, unique in the world, aims to show that it is possible to bring a specialist (surgeon, engineer or any specialized person) onboard for an emergency. Until now, mid-ocean interventions onboard could only be done by helicopter or by the assistance of other ships which could take several days. With the ATL2, a very powerful and flexible aircraft, which has a state-of-the art communication system allowing it to correspond directly with underwater military forces, only a few hours are necessary to carry out the operation.
