Trapped underground

At Christmas 2009, three cavers trapped at 700m deep in the Gouffre Romy, in the Massif de la Pierre Saint Martin (France), made the headlines. After 70 hours spent in extreme conditions, the three men managed to escape by themselves from the siphon that barred their exit. Among them was Damien Butaeye, Hydrogeologist and specialized photographer of the Rapsodia team... This dramatic story has publicly revealed the existence of an unfamiliar activity: caving exploration. But after this mediatised episode, many questions remain: Who are those modern times adventurers? What are they looking for in this dangerous and hostile world? How organize and conduct such an underground expedition? How those experienced cavers have been trapped? Who organize and pays the rescue in case of problem in this kind of adventures? Back to info thanks to the photographs taken in the Gouffre Romy.
